How to Care for Your New LandscapingAfter your new landscaping is installed, there are a few tips to remember, ensuring your plants' survival.
Water is KEY! Watering is the key to all landscaping during the first year. The question we are always asked is how much, and how often?
During the warm months, new landscaping should be watered deeply once or twice a week when there is no rainfall. Just watering to get the surface wet is not enough - each plant needs to be watered well so the entire root ball is saturated.
A note on watering technique: there are a number of plants (roses, lilacs, etc) that respond negatively to repeatedly getting their leaves wet. To be safe, and if hand watering, make an effort to water the base of the plant instead of the leaves.
Continue to water through the first growing season or longer if dry conditions exist.
If an irrigation system is present, talk to the technician to be sure all of the landscaping is watered properly. The technician can change and/or redirect an irrigation head and re-program the irrigation time needed. Hand watering on a few of the plantings out of reach from existing irrigation the first year may be necessary.
Be careful to not over-water. It is possible to kill a plant with kindness. Overwatering causes the roots to rot and ultimate death of the tree. If you are not sure whether water is needed, dig down at least 3-4" (past the mulch layer) and check for moisture in the soil. If the soil is not damp, it is time to water. There is no substitution for physically verifying the moisture content of the soil.
Maintain the Mulch. Mulch is very important. It keeps moisture in, temperatures steady and weeds down. Make sure it is not more than four inches deep or piled against the trunks of the shrubs (Read more about saying no to the mulch volcano!). Weed and replace mulch as needed to keep a good coverage. Pruning. Generally, aside from removing dead or damaged branches, landscape pruning is usually done to obtain/maintain a desired size. Learn more about landscape pruning.
