ANNUAL Tree Climbing CompetitionsTree climbing is a honed skill that requires knowledge, discipline and strength. ISA's annual climbing competition promotes safe working practices, demonstrated improvements in equipment & technique, and industry recognition.
MTC&L has a long history of participants and winners in the Ohio competition. Each year the First place winner in the Ohio competition advances to the subsequent international competition.
Competition History. Started in the 1970s by an arborist and tree service owner in California, the first tree climbing competition was created with "the intent of preserving the classic skills that would prepare a climber equipped with nothing more than a rope to have the ability to save a life in an aerial rescue."
As the competition grew, the event was eventually expanded and sanctioned by the local chapters of the International Society of Arborists (ISA). Read more about the history of this event.
Events. Contestants compete in five preliminary events to qualify as one of the top contestants who earn the right to advance to the championship round. The preliminary events include:
• Belayed Speed Climb • Aerial Rescue • Work Climb • Throwline
Top winners from these events advance to the Masters Challenge. The Masters Challenge is the final event of the day and combines all skills into one final challenge. The winner of the Masters Challenge is named the champion and advances to the International Competition held later in the year.
